The rôle of absolute instability in the solar dynamo
نویسنده
چکیده
The presence of the equator and poles has a profound effect on the critical dynamonumberDf for the onset of dynamo waves and their subsequent nonlinear evolution. The instability threshold is associated with the onset of absolute instability, which is necessary for the existence of a globally unstablemode. With increasingD thewaves become very rapidly nonlinear and the region of activity extends to higher and higher latitudes. The wave frequency is selected in the polar regions where the mode amplitude is small. Secondary absolute instabilities lead to the coexistence of waves with different wavenumbers, frequencies and amplitudes at different latitudes.

Study of Solar Magnetic and Gravitational Energies Through the Virial Theorem
Virial theorem is important for understanding stellar structures. It produces an interesting connection between magnetic and gravitational energies. Using the general form of the virial theorem including the magnetic field (toroidal magnetic field), we may explain the solar dynamo model in relation to variations of the magnetic and gravitational energies. We emphasize the role of the gravitatio...
متن کاملDynamo action by differential rotation in a stably stratified stellar interior
Magnetic fields can be created in stably stratified (non-convective) layers in a differentially rotating star. A magnetic instability in the toroidal field (wound up by differential rotation) replaces the role of convection in closing the field amplification loop. Tayler instability is likely to be the most relevant magnetic instability. A dynamo model is developed from these ingredients, and a...
متن کاملMagnetic flux concentrations from dynamo-generated fields
Context. The mean-field theory of magnetized stellar convection gives rise to two distinct instabilities: the large-scale dynamo instability, operating in the bulk of the convection zone and a negative effective magnetic pressure instability (NEMPI) operating in the strongly stratified surface layers. The latter might be important in connection with magnetic spot formation. However, as follows ...
متن کاملThe fate of alpha dynamos at large Rm
At the heart of today’s solar magnetic field evolution models lies the alpha dynamo description. In this work, we investigate the fate of alpha-dynamos as the magnetic Reynolds number Rm is increased. Using Floquet theory, we are able to precisely quantify mean field effects like the alpha and beta effect (i) by rigorously distinguishing dynamo modes that involve large scale components from the...
متن کاملCrisis-Induced intermittency due to Attractor-Widening in a Buoyancy-Driven Solar dynamo
In a recent paper [M. A. J. H. Ossendrijver, A&A 359, 364 (2000)] numerical simulations of a 2D mean–field model where shown to produce grand minima, typical of the long-term behavior of solar magnetic activity. The model consisted of dynamo that features an α effect based on the buoyancy instability of magnetic fluxtubes, which gives rise to the switching back and forth from grand minima to “r...
